6 Days Rongai Route
Overview
The Rongai Route offers a quieter and less crowded ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the northern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border. Known for its gentle slopes, stunning views, and unique alpine landscapes, this route provides excellent acclimatization and a high summit success rate. Over six days, trekkers will journey through lush forests, moorlands, and rocky alpine deserts, culminating in the unforgettable experience of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This trek is ideal for those who prefer a more peaceful route with breathtaking scenery and excellent wildlife spotting along the way.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your transfer driver who will welcome you and escort you to your hotel in Moshi. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the hotel pool, exploring the town, or resting after your flight. In the evening, your mountain guide will meet you for a briefing on the Rongai Route trek.

After breakfast, you will drive to Rongai Gate (1,950 m) to begin your trek. The day follows gentle trails through lush forest, gradually ascending toward Simba Camp (2,750 m). Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the flora and fauna unique to the northern slopes. Dinner and overnight are at Simba Camp, allowing your body to acclimatize.

Trekking continues from Simba Camp through moorland and open plains, offering panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s western glaciers. The route passes unique rock formations before reaching Kikelewa Caves Camp (3,600 m). The higher elevation prepares you for the summit attempt while providing spectacular scenery. Dinner and overnight are at Kikelewa Caves Camp.

You will trek through rocky alpine terrain to reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,300 m), located near the base of Mount Mawenzi. This section provides excellent acclimatization and stunning views of the jagged Mawenzi peaks. Dinner and overnight are at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, resting before the summit night.

The final ascent begins around midnight, climbing toward Stella Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to witness sunrise over Africa’s highest point. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, you will descend back to Kikelewa Caves Camp (3,600 m) for lunch and overnight.

After breakfast, descend through open plains and forest to Rongai Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Key’s Hotel in Moshi or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
