Overview
Climbing Mount Meru is an unforgettable adventure and one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in Tanzania. Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in the country and is located inside the beautiful Arusha National Park, just a short drive from Arusha.
This scenic trek takes you through diverse landscapes including open grasslands, dense montane forests, and alpine desert zones. Unlike many other mountain climbs, the journey begins with wildlife sightings where trekkers often see giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and various bird species along the trail. The climb is guided by experienced mountain guides and accompanied by an armed park ranger for safety due to the wildlife within the park.
As you ascend higher, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and dramatic ridgelines before reaching the summit known as Socialist Peak. On a clear day, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking sunrise views and a stunning sight of the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds in the distance.
The Mount Meru climb is often recommended as an excellent acclimatization trek before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro, but it is also a fantastic adventure on its own for hikers seeking a quieter and more scenic mountain experience in northern Tanzania.

In the morning you will drive from Arusha to the Momella Gate located inside Arusha National Park. After registration with the park authorities, the trek begins accompanied by an armed ranger because of wildlife in the area.
The trail passes through open grasslands and forest where you may see giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and various bird species. As you climb higher, the vegetation changes to dense mountain forest.
After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) where dinner and overnight stay will be provided.
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
After breakfast, continue the trek through beautiful montane forest and giant heather vegetation. Along the trail you will enjoy spectacular views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone.
The climb becomes steeper as you approach Saddle Hut (3,570 m), located between the summit of Mount Meru and Little Meru Peak.
After lunch you may take an optional short hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) to help with acclimatization and enjoy incredible sunset views.
Dinner and overnight stay at Saddle Hut.
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
The summit attempt begins around midnight. Trek slowly along a narrow ridge toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point, enjoying stunning views of the crater below.
At sunrise you will reach the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m), the highest point of Mount Meru. On clear days you can see the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch and continue down to Momella Gate where your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha.
