6 Days Marangu route
Overview
The 6-Day Marangu Route offers a memorable and well-paced climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, reaching an elevation of 5,895 meters at Uhuru Peak. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the oldest and most established trail on the mountain, known for its gradual ascent profile, which helps climbers acclimatise and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
The trek begins at the lush rainforests of the Marangu Gate, passing through bamboo forests, giant heathers, and the alpine desert before reaching the lunar landscapes near the summit. Along the way, climbers experience dramatic crater views, diverse flora, and sweeping panoramas of northern Tanzania.
Accommodation is provided in mountain huts along the trail, offering a more comfortable trekking experience compared to tented camps on other routes. The summit attempt typically starts around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, offering unforgettable views of Africa from the “Roof of Africa.”

Arrive at Moshi, Tanzania and transfer to the Marangu Gate for registration. Meet your guides and porters; pack for the trek. Begin a short hike to Mandara Hut (2,700 m) through lush rainforest. Enjoy your first night in the mountain hut.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Trek through the beautiful rainforest, passing giant heathers and bamboo zones. Gradually ascend toward Horombo Hut (3,720 m) on the lower slopes of the mountain. Afternoon at leisure to rest and acclimatize; optional short hike around the area.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Take an acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (4,050 m) and back. Return to Horombo Hut to rest and prepare for the summit. Helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness while enjoying scenic views of the surrounding alpine zone.

Early breakfast, then begin the trek toward Kibo Hut (4,700 m), crossing the alpine desert. The trail is more exposed, with dramatic views of Kibo Crater and surrounding ridges, prepare for summit night; early dinner and rest.

Summit attempt begins around midnight, Climb through the lunar landscape to Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Enjoy sunrise and panoramic views from the top of Africa. Descend back to Kibo Hut for brunch, then continue to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for overnight rest.

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Celebrate your successful climb and receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi town for onward travel or rest.
